Springs High School Drama Club presents
"Bells are Ringing: March 25-27
“Bells are Ringing,” a Tony Award-winning musical comedy, will
be presented by the Saratoga Springs High School Drama Club
March 25-27 in the Loewenberg Auditorium.
Show times are 7 p.m. Thursday, March 25, and 7:30 p.m. Friday,
March 26, and Saturday, March 27. Tickets, priced at $10 for
adults and $5 for students and seniors, are available at the
door or can be reserved by calling 469-6748.
The show is directed by Bob Berenis, with musical direction by
Jeff Halstead and choreography by Tina Baird and Anny DeGange
Holgate.
The show takes the audience back to a time before answering
machines and voice mail, when real people staffed telephone
answering services like the play’s “Susananswerphone.”
For Ella Peterson, a phone service employee, the lines
become blurred between taking messages and getting involved in
her customers’ lives. The entertainment begins when Ella falls
sight unseen for customer “Plaza 0 – 4433.”
A subplot involves Sue, owner of “Susananswerphone,” and suave
con man Sandor. Sue falls in love with Sandor, a bookie who is
using her company to set up a new operation. Meanwhile, the
police are trying to shut down the answering service, and Ella
tries to help customers Blake Barton, a Marlon Brando wannabe,
and Joseph Kitchell, a dentist who wants to be a songwriter.
The play is a classic comedy with a delightful musical score,
including popular standards “Just in Time” and “The Party’s
Over.” The show features a cast of 58
students, a pit orchestra with 25 members, mostly
students, and a student technical crew.
