The Saratoga Springs High School Graphic Design and Printing Club recently completed a sensory path project. The project, which began in 2018, was installed at Lake Avenue Elementary School in June after years of work.
Many students benefit from movement breaks during the day to stay focused and engaged in the classroom. A sensory path offers students a purposeful way to take a break with the benefits of movement, self-regulation, and coordination. The path is made of made up of colorful and creative floor decals for students to hop, balance, and walk along. It also has academic components including following directions, counting, matching, and more!
The students in the club designed and printed each decal that is part of the path. The path has five themed sections and about 80 decals, as well as a dedication to Mr. Jim Flanders who was the club advisor in 2018 when the project began. The students include Ciara Byrne, Kathleen Dumar, Anna Farrell, Celia Nolan, Madeline Noonan, Audrey Park, Alex Roginski, Nicola Thomas, and Ava Zinter.
A second path will soon be installed in the kindergarten wing of Lake Avenue Elementary School. The club hopes to expand on this work and create sensory paths for other elementary schools in the district in the future.
